Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

The behaviour of fluids in a process system directly impacts on how effective that process is. This is particularly relevant when undertaking separation of oil, gas, water and solids phases in an oil production facility. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) provides Oil companies with a detailed understanding of the impact of the fluid dynamics on process efficiency. Backed with expert knowledge and sound experience, CFD can contribute to substantial improvements in productivity.

Opus has pioneered their use of CFD as a design aid for process optimisation and technology development. Advances in computer processing power have significantly increased the ability of CFD to accurately predict fluids behaviour under a large range of conditions.

Combined with the knowledge and experience of Opus engineers plus that of our collaborative partner CD-adapco and physical modelling in the Opus fluids laboratory, CFD becomes a powerful resource for visualising fluids behaviour. It can be applied to a wide range of process cases, including transient or upset conditions such as sloshing due to motion e.g. on an FPSO, or slugging caused by upstream flow characteristics.

The benefits of utilising Opus’ CFD capability:

CFD forms a fundamental part of the Opus approach to process and mechanical design and optimisation of client’s oil and gas production facilities. Combined with Visual Dynamic Modelling and the expertise of the Opus team, CFD offers a formidable tool for maximising process efficiency, cost effectively.
